Essay Prompt:
Rhetorically analyze Stanley Milgram′s article, ″The Perils of ObedienceLinks to an external site..″ The most important thing to remember is that you are NOT arguing with the author, or commenting on the topic. I want you to identify the purpose of the writing, and provide an analysis on his use of each of the appeals (ethos, logos, and pathos), including which one you think he used the most or most successfully. Here are some rhetorical questions from our slides to help you develop your paragraphs:
What is the rhetorical situation?
What occasion gives rise to the need or opportunity for persuasion?
Who is the author/speaker and what are his/her credentials?
How does the author or speaker appeal to reason? To emotion? To logic?
What is the author′s intention?
What kind of style and tone is used and for what purpose?
Does the message/speech/text succeed in fulfilling the author′s intentions?
Why is it successful or unsuccessful of achieving what the author set out to do (NOT convincing you as an individual)
Look at style, tone, delivery- NOT whether or not you agree with the message.
What does the nature of the communication reveal about the culture that produced it?
Why does this document exist in this way, in our society?
