Subject: Choose a brief scene (1 page at the most) that you think exemplifies one of the themes of the play, as revealed through plot and character. Watch this brief instructional video before beginning your own project. Your paper will consist of an analysis of a brief scene from one of these plays, including an explanation of how your staging of the scene reveals an important point in the plot, characterization, and theme. When you choose the type of stage you want to use for your scene–Greek Theater, Proscenium, Globe, Thrust, Black Box, or Arena, take into account the opportunities and limitations of each type. In other words, make sure that your stage design matches the kind of stage you have chosen to use. Be careful to apply the terminology of drama correctly. Watch this brief explanation of blocking and stage directions.
Organization of your analysis:
In the introduction, prepare the reader for your argument by giving a brief summary of the entire play, and then focusing on why you chose your particular scene for this assignment: In what way does this scene exemplify an important theme? And what is that theme? Make sure you choose a brief scene of no more than two pages.
The body of the paper should, then, put this brief scene into the context of the play as a whole: describe the setting, the characters—their motivations, conflicts—costuming, the lighting, characters’ positions onstage.
The conclusion should explain the implications of your choices as a director for the ways in which your audience will then interpret this scene in light of the whole play.
Don’t forget to include a works cited page.
Diagram: Submit a well-planned diagram of a staged scene from the play to accompany your written analysis of the way in which that scene exemplifies what you perceive to be an important theme. This assignment is not about art–if you don’t consider yourself much of an artist, no worries–the main point is to create a clear diagram that includes all of the elements listed below.
If you have colored pens or pencils, use them to make your diagram clear, or use a computer program (see the examples below). Blocking a scene, remember, involves showing the positions of the actors and their movements. Indicate where the characters should be standing when the scene opens and where they are moving in the scene by using dotted lines and arrows. Different colored pencils can help to clarify various characters and their positions on stage. Describe the kind of clothing you envision the characters wearing, or you can, as one student last year did, find and display pictures of the clothing.
On this diagram label the following:
lighting
blocking
costuming
props
stage directions and
the type of stage you are using for your scene.
Remember to indicate the beginning and closing lines of the scene so that I know where in the play this scene occurs.
SIZE OF PAPER for your stage diagram: As long as your diagram clearly shows the details, the size of paper you use is not as important as the type of paper: if you use lined paper, for instance, the diagram may be more difficult to see.
