Assignment:
Choose ONE of the following three topics. Identify in your introduction which topic you have chosen. Write a cohesive essay, double-spaced, 750 words, addressing all of the issues referenced for that topic using specific material from the week’s readings. A “cohesive” essay means no bullet points or numbered answers; use paragraphs and transitions between your ideas. Cite properly all references from class materials (see video clips on proper citation linked under my picture on our course home page; using sources without citing is plagiarism and will earn a zero for the assignment!)
Topic choice #1: Discuss the rationale for taking a child away from a mother who was abusing drugs during pregnancy. Why is this done? Is taking the baby away immediately following birth in the best interests of the child? Present multiple perspectives on the issue, supporting your arguments for each with material from the reading. (Note: you will likely need to refer to material from chapters from past weeks as well.)
Topic choice #2: Why do the media and the public pay so much attention to physical and sexual maltreatment rather than neglect and psychological maltreatment when the latter two are much more common? What effects might this have on the identification of situations of neglect and psychological maltreatment and the ability of victims to get help? Provide evidence from the reading to support your arguments.
Topic choice #3: Does the reading suggest that witnessing interparental aggression is a form of psychological maltreatment? Why or why not? Present and discuss the evidence that leads you to draw your conclusion.
