Choose a local AA Meeting to attend – Information Only
You will attend an open Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) group meeting and process your experience in a 300 word paper. It will be important to inform me in week one, by sending a note to my email, the names of two meetings you have selected to attend. You will select the primary meeting and then a backup meeting just in case there are problems that prevent you from attending the first meeting. Reflect on this experience in light of all you have learned in this class. Cite at least two sources in your reflections. You will post your completed reflection paper assignment in week 4.
Please complete this assignment in the following stages:
Select the AA meeting to attend and inform instructor of your selection by the end of week one.
Attend the AA meeting and inform your instructor of the meeting you attended by the end of week three. You can send your information in an email.
Write a 300 word paper processing this experience and submit it to the assignment box by midnight on Wednesday at the end of week four.
Meeting requirements:
You must attend a 12-step style meeting (e.g. AA, NA). See here for a list of different 12-step facilitated support groups.
You must attend an OPEN meeting. Open meetings are those that allow outsiders to observe. The meeting information should specifically state that it is an open meeting. Do not assume that it is! If in doubt, contact a group leader and ask for permission to attend the meeting as a student observer. If the meeting is listed as an open meeting, then you do not need to ask permission to attend.
Be respectful and polite. Do not speak unless asked to do so.
If asked to introduce yourself, be honest about why you are attending the meeting. Do not pretend to be in recovery if you are not!
