You will choose one essay from Best American Magazine Writing 2014 (on Library tab of Perusall on Moodle) OR an approved travel article and analyze it. for the personal critical essay, you’ll need approx. 1200. Format can be casual (non-academic) and personal; you’ll probably need quotes to illustrate points you’re making about language, theme, scenes, etc. Feel free to experiment. If that’s too much freedom for you, do what you’re comfortable with. Again, as always, I will mark as many words as you need to make your points — so don’t worry about maximum word counts. The following are rough guidelines to analyze the published essay, and to critique each other’s draft stories: Twelve things to consider in workshop: Is there balance between scene and summary? Does the musing or reflection contribute to the overall theme? Is the writer one step ahead of the reader? Is there enough realistic dialogue? Are the characters (and narrator) developed? Has the author “shown” them rather than “told” them? Is the sense of place developed? Are enough specific place names used? Are all the senses employed? Has the place been adequately researched? Is the pacing appropriate? Should anything be slowed down? Sped up? Is the voice detectable? Should the voice be more present? Is it consistent? Is it honest? Is the language tight? Are active verbs and minimal prepositions used? Are the sentence lengths varied? Is there grammatical exactness? Is the piece in the right tense? Can the beginning be cut? The end? Any other cuts? Any places that need more development?
