PURPOSE
The purpose of this discussion is to examine the role of conditioning, “food as reward,” in disordered eating, as well as commonalities and intersection among eating disorders and addiction.
ASSIGNMENT
Step 1:
Many of us can relate to the “clean plate club” as well as food as reward and punishment. That is, “if you eat your dinner, you can have dessert,” or “now you’ll go to bed hungry.”
Although food makes an excellent reinforcer and punisher, what message does it send to children? What about the “clean plate club”? It is important to again stress the importance of these associations with food as something other than sustenance and the message that it sends.
What are other ways in which you have seen food with associated with reinforcement or punishment?
How may some of these associations create problematic messages around food, eating and body image?
Additionally, consider how the understanding of disordered eating has changed over time.
Step 2:
This week, we are covering Mood Disorders and Suicide, Eating Disorders, and Addiction Disorders in the same week. Neuroscience in this area, however, has found commonalities in the development, treatment and prognosis of these disorders. According to your reading(s) and/or external sources, how do you see the relationships between these seemingly-disparate groups of disorders?
