ASSESSMENT DESCRIPTION
The final project assignment provides you with the opportunity to showcase your understanding and insights on key
themes explored throughout the semester in this unit using a video presentation. You will choose one of the provided
questions and plan out a video presentation response that effectively communicates your ideas, utilising material from
the course to support your arguments.
The objectives of the final project assignment are as follows:
• Display a deep understanding of the unit material and its relevance to key themes related to wellbeing and the
flourishing of human communities.
• Analyse and evaluate your chosen question, demonstrating critical thinking skills and the ability to articulate
informed opinions and perspectives.
• Deliver a clear and engaging verbal presentation that effectively conveys complex ideas to an audience with
varying levels of familiarity with the course content.
• Incorporate readings, lectures, and tutorial discussions from the course to support your arguments and
enhance the credibility of your presentation.
• Please see below the questions and respond to one of these questions:
o Why should community workers have a thorough understanding of social policy ideas and practices?
In your discussion, explain three specific areas of knowledge from this unit that are useful in this
understanding and why.
o Why is “evidence-based” policy important? How is social policy action influenced by different types of
evidence and how it is used? Include some examples in your discussion.
o Language used about ‘community’ in social policy is often ambiguous, narrow and nostalgic, and can
contribute poor or misguided outcomes in social policy practice. Discuss why ideas about community
are important in formulating social policies that are current and responsive to people’s needs.

o In what ways does the ‘framing’ of social challenges influence how policy is carried out? In your
response, give some examples of the way you see language being used to frame certain social policy
discussions and the implications this has.
o Why is it important to be a “humane” practitioner within the context of policy-making processes?
Highlight both challenges and opportunities. Discuss how adopting a humane approach can enhance
the effectiveness and inclusivity of social policies and provide real-world examples or case studies to
illustrate the application of humane principles in policy development or implementation.
GUIDELINES for SUCCESS
Content
requirements
μ Choose one of the questions and plan out a verbal presentation in response to the
question.
μ One good way to think about this task is to imagine you are explaining your answer
to someone who hasn’t taken this course, but they are interested in topics like
wellbeing and the flourishing of human communities. You should show that you can
explain the topics you are covering as clearly as possible to someone who is well-
informed but doesn’t know as much about them as you do.
μ You should aim to explain your answer as if you are giving a presentation, rather
than just reading a script.
μ Please use material from the course to help you explain your ideas, including
readings, lectures, and tutorial discussions.
Video
requirements
μ This assignment requires you to make a video in which you explain your response
to one of the questions.
μ The video should be between 5 and 8 minutes long.
μ You can record the video on a device that is convenient to you, such as a phone or
laptop or camera – the LMS will accept almost all video file types.
μ The video needs to be high quality enough for us to hear what you’re saying clearly
and to see you clearly.
μ You can use some visual aids to help you explain your ideas and you are welcome
to be creative with this. For example, you might show some pictures related to your
response. You are also allowed to use some slides (e.g. PowerPoint slides) but no
more than three, and we would like to see you talking for the majority of the time
(more than half). In a video project we had last year, one student used some hand
drawn signs to add to her presentation and held them up while she talked. Please
feel free to be creative.
μ It is definitely fine to make a video just of you talking – a bit like a short TED talk
focussed on you. You could also do a conversational style or video podcast
interview where one of your friends ask you on of the questions and you provide a
detailed indepth presentation of the topic. Please note that if you choose the video
interview format, you would have to do most of the talking.
μ There are a variety of applications you can use to make your video, such as the
standard video app you may have on a phone, but there is also a video app called
Echo360 which you can use which will record both a face and screen at the same

time. Instructions for using these are on a document on the assignment page under
the final project heading.
Referencing
and source
requirements
μ We want you to draw on some good quality sources to support your explanation in
response to the question.
μ Submit a one-page reference list on a separate document; submit this in the same
place where you submit your video. The LMS will allow you to submit 2 files: the
video and the reference list.
μ Yor reference list should include at least 5 sources which you use to give your video
response, and you should mention these during your presentation.
μ You don’t need to give full reference details in the presentation but you can mention
the name of the source. For example, you might say “Hartley Dean writes about
social policy being …” or “The Department of Housing has information about …”.
μ Your actual reference list should have the full reference details, like you would for
other assignment, so follow the APA referencing guide as usual.
HOW TO SUBMIT
A link for online submission will be provided on LMS. Submit your assessment on LMS. Please upload your video
presentation directly on LMS or you can choose to upload your video on youtube or google drive. However ensure
your videos are visible and accessible.
HOW IT IS ASSESSED (summary)
You will be assessed based on the assessment description, guideline for success as well as the
marking guide available on LMS.
The assessment includes a moderation process to ensure reliable, just, and fair outcomes.
Your assessment outcome will be provided to you via LMS.
A section outlining the principles of Academic Integrity has been provided in this document. Please read it in
detail. Requirements include that each and all your submissions should be entirely your own independentwork, submitted online and in full, in the required document formats, by the published due
