—Photographs individuals (or groups) take of themselves, regardless of whether those photos are privately held (or thought to be privately held), transferred to others, or displayed via social networks.
In 2013, the Oxford English Dictionary added the word “selfie” as its word of the year. Selfies appear to be individual products, yet sociology informs us that selfies originate from the social world (C. Wright Mills), and that external factors play a role. Selfies, therefore, can represent a part of one’s “cultural bubble.” This exercise is for you to take a selfie, and analyze it by using sociological theories.
Your Tasks:
First, take a NEW selfie (Note: Do NOT post a legsie, a belfie, or a drelfie!)
Second, TYPE your answers to the following questions [refer to Newman, Chapters 5 and 6; include citations and a Bibliography]:
Your Selfie: Where did you take your picture? How did you prepare for your selfie? Is there a story being told in your photo?
To what extent does your selfie represent Cooley’s “looking-glass self”?
Besides technology (as an external factor), what are some values and cultural norms that are present in selfies as a social act? [Be able to relate how norms tell us how we should pursue values]
Consider the notion of presentation of self. How do selfies represent a form of “impression management” (see Newman)? In your answer, refer to aspects of dramaturgy (include props!).
