Each of us become literate in community with other people. We learn to speak as infants from our caregivers, we learn different ways of communicating with different groups of people, we read books that are recommended to us by other people, we learn to write and to have confidence as writers – or not – from our teachers and parents and community. Consider the literacy narratives we have read and how the various writers reference other people who have influenced them as writers. Who has influenced your own journey as a writer, reader, or thinker? Consider that “literacy” can be broadly defined – you may be “literate” in ways that aren’t conventional (e.g. “ag literacy”). Assignment: Write a letter to a person who influenced your own literacy narrative. It may be someone who has a positive and/or a negative impact on your literacy narrative. Whether that person has helped or hindered you, consider how you might convey that impact to them in a productive and thoughtful way. Submission: Submit your letter as an attachment on blackboard. Your letter should follow letter format and be 2 pages, following the style guidelines listed in the syllabus.
