The “country_data.xlsx” Excel file (posted in the Data module) contains various statistics for the countries of the world. (Some small countries are not included.) The file “country_variables.txt” contains short descriptions of what each of the statistics measures.
1a. Make a histogram of the infant mortality rate variable (Column AE). Discuss this graph. What kind of shape does it have?
1b. Calculate the mean and the median of the infant mortality rate variable. Do these match with what you expect from the shape of the graph?
2a. Make a histogram of the urban population variable (Column V). (This variable measures the percentage of the population of each country that lives in cities.) Discuss this graph. What kind of shape does it have?
2b. Calculate the mean and the median of the urban population variable. Do these match with what you expect from the shape of the graph?
2c. Calculate the standard deviation of the urban population variable. What percentage of the countries turn out to be within one standard deviation of the mean? What percentage of the countries turn out to be within two standard deviations of the mean? How close are these to the percentages you would see in the Normal distribution?
3. Make side-by-side boxplots of the urban population variable, for the different regions of the world (Column B). Discuss what you learn from this graph. How do the regions differ in their urban population percentages?
4. Make a scatterplot for the urban population variable and the GDP per capita variable (Column I). Describe the pattern between these two variables.
5. Pick one more variable and make a set of side-by-side boxplots for this variable and the different regions of the world. Discuss what you learn from this graph.
6. Pick two more variables and make a scatterplot for them. Try to find a pair of variables that have some kind of a pattern between them. Discuss what you learn from this graph.
