I want to write my ethics paper on something along the lines of keeping a patient on a vent without quality of life. We deal with this a lot in my unit and we often speak about the ethical and moral obligations in these situations. Many nurses feel it is wrong to keep someone on a vent that is obtunded and has no quality of life while they just deteriorate and eventually die anyway (that’s what has happened in every case so far). It is an extremely difficult situation for all.
