Chapter 14 – Treating the partners of individuals with SUD. This chapter starts by looking at some the common myths related to partners of individuals with SUD. Particularly looking at how traditional societal norms impact the perceptions of marriage and gender roles specifically in relation to one partner’s use of a substance. There is discussion of some of the common terms that is often used when working with couples and a brief overview of some treatment approaches.
Chapter 15 – Dynamics and Treatment Issues with children of individuals with SUD. The author discusses that children of substance abusing parents are at a high risk of experiencing physical, sexual, and/or emotional abuse. As well as witnessing violence toward a family member. There is a discussion of the ACE study which I will include the self-assessment in your module this week. There is several case examples throughout this chapter to help relate the material. Pay special attention to the discussion of countertransference issues. This can assist us in understanding why a client may be reacting to our attempts to understand their experiences.
