You will be assigned to respond in writing to one state or federal court opinion relating to communication/media law every two weeks. Each written case response will require you to:
Summarize the facts of the case, the primary legal issue or question in the case, the decision or rule announced by the court, the court’s reasons for coming to its conclusion. (Please refer to this sample case brief Download this sample case brief, which shows what this initial summary or “case brief” generally should look like.);
Respond to the court’s reasoning and holding in that case (for example, in a paragraph of 200-300 words) by explaining whether you agree or disagree with the court’s holding and reasoning AND explaining why you agree or disagree with the court’s decision or some part of the court’s reasoning;

You are to choose one of the legal decisions contained in the assigned readings for the prior two-week period (those listed under “Cases” in the daily class outline on Canvas; for this week choose one of the cases noted on one of these pages:
Topic 3: Introduction to the First Amendment
Topic 4: Symbolic Speech and the First Amendment
Then, if necessary, use Thomson Reuters Westlaw or Google Scholar (for example) to locate the full text of the judges’ decision and base your brief off of that full decision.
Grading breakdown (out of 25 points):
Summary of the case/case brief: 5 points
Response to the case: 20 points
Missing citation: 5 points (subtracted from the total from the two items above)
