Question 1: Compare/contrast Grounded Theory (Glaser & Strauss) and Constructivist Grounded Theory (Charmaz). Discuss participant selection, data collection, and analysis.
Question 2: Compare Descriptive Phenomenology (Husserl) and Interpretive Phenomenology (Heidegger). Discuss participant selection, data collection, and analysis.

This is HER REPLY to the above questions:
“Hi, I’m Jamie. My research question is in patients with depression how to medication in cognitive behavioral therapy versus medication alone affect mental health outcomes within six months. In grounded theory, the problem emerges from data rather than starting with a research problem. Participants are selected after the topic is determined. The collection of research, data analysis, and participant sampling occur simultaneously, and this process is continuous. Interviews and observations are the most common data source. Constructivist grounded theory believes that reality is socially constructed by individuals interacting with each other. In this method, the researcher interacts with the participants to form an understanding of their perspective. In constructivist grounded theory, the researchers actively involved. Instead of just looking at the data. My research would utilize constructivist grounded theory by discussing my topic depression with the participants and how they have treated their depression in the past. Descriptive phenomenology evaluates individuals experiences to understand what we know about them. Researchers interact with participants through open ended questions while setting aside their own feelings and biases. By drawing on life experiences, researchers see common themes and perspectives for data analysis. Interpretive phenomenology sees the participant and the researcher as co-creators. The sample size of participants is typically small and allows the researcher to spend more time with each participant. Descriptive phenomenology could also be used to discuss depression with open ended questions in my research. Critical social theory is an expansive perspective designed to analyze and change social structures and power relations. It reveals that social events are not natural or unavoidable. Instead, they are shaped by historical, cultural, and political influences. One methodology to which critical social theory is applied is through reflexivity, which is the researchers awareness of their own position, biases, and assumptions. By reflecting on their own social circumstances, researchers can identify hidden biases and ensure their research is rooted in a critical perspective. Critical social theory applies to mass research because there’s often a stigma surrounding the discussion of depression, and this needs to be addressed to ensure that research can accurately be collected. Feminist theory provides a perspective aimed at analyzing and transforming gender relationships as well as patriarchal power structures. It emphasizes the significance of gender analysis in research, concentrating on how gender intersects with the other social categories, such as race, class, and sexuality to shape social phenomena. Gender analysis can reveal hidden biases and power dynamics within research. Participant reaction research involves researchers and participants working together to understand social issues and take actions to foster change. Power is when individuals experiencing the problem engage and lead initiatives to create positive social transformation. They accomplish this through organized research aimed to get at gaining new knowledge. This could also be applied to my research by the actual participants being, um, patients who have suffered from depression in the past.”
