We typically think of homicide as a crime and a criminal justice issue. However, as we learned in this unit, it is also a public health issue. Discuss why we continue to see homicide as a crime only and what the benefits would be of broadening our understanding of this type of violence as a public health issue.
In this course, our discussions are what we describe as ‘asynchronous’; that is, students discuss an assigned question, exchanging ideas related to this question at varying points each week. A key benefit of asynchronous online discussions is that students can participate whenever it is most convenient (although see grading rubric about timing of posts below) and can think about the weekly discussion questions before participating. In this way, students often feel better prepared as they have read and engaged with the course materials before participating (which is also one of the important aspects discussed in the grading rubric below).
The purpose of the discussion forums is to have students engage with course material and then demonstrate their understanding of course materials by expressing/explaining an idea, responding to other group members’ ideas, and/or developing a thread of ideas together as a group. In this way, students learn from the instructor, the course materials, and each other. It further provides students with ongoing opportunities to review, reflect upon, and apply new knowledge such as concepts, theories, or research findings. This will help when students are working on their two major writing assignments for this course which also requires knowledge of and engagement with course materials.
There will be diverse perspectives and that is o.k. However, all students must strive to be constructive and considerate if they disagree with any of their group members. It is okay to challenge and disagree with each other but only if it is done in a respectful manner.
Note: There is no single ‘right answer’ and the approach you describe need not reflect all of the tactics! The goal here is to generate discussion and share ideas about how best to engage in challenging conversations about climate change.

READING NO:6 A third reason why it is important to study homicide is this: although few of us will be direct victims of homicide, this does not mean we should or do remain unaffected by these events. We are bombarded with images of homicide daily and, as a result, we sometimes forget that, although rare compared to other types of crime, homicides do occur, and they happen to real people and the impact of homicide can be far-reaching. Even though we may not know those involved, we often feel the impact of these events in a variety of ways— sadness, fear, confusion, and anger. This can impact how we live our lives.
At the global level, this impact can be seen by understanding how homicidal violence can impact the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. The interplay between homicidal violence and SDGs is clearly laid out in the following figure (three images) taken from the Global Study of Homicide 2019 report. As part of your knowledge building in this course, you should note the reciprocal impacts between homicidal violence and various factors identified in the SDGs (and, yes, they are required). : (If you wish to access the UNODC Global Study of Homicide publication that expands on this figure, review the 2019 booklet, Homicide, development and the Sustainable Development Goals. It is not required, but is informative.)

At the more local level, few of us remained unaffected by the Nova Scotia mass killings that occurred on April 18 and 19, 2020 across multiple communities that left at least 22 women and men dead as well as the perpetrator who was finally apprehended and killed by police. The impact of this mass homicide reverberated across the nation and will continue to have an impact for years to come. We will come back to this event later in the course.

At the more academic level, research has examined how you and others around you may be affected by homicides, directly or indirectly, especially given that many of us believe that we remain unaffected. Understanding the impact on those who do know the victims or killers is also important and to help you understand this further, if interested, is a supplementary reading that discusses the health consequences of homicide on families and friends (see Mastrocinque et al. 2014).
However, one of the best ways to understand the impacts of homicide is to listen to family members or friends that have been left behind. The following video features two co-victims who spoke at the opening plenary of the Canadian Domestic Homicide Prevention Conference in 2017, co-hosted by myself and my research collaborator in London, Ontario. One woman speaks about the loss of her sister and the second woman speaks about the loss of her mother. Each of the two women are speaking about two different homicides that occurred in different parts of our country.

Finally, there is the financial cost of homicide. While there is no comparable research in Canada, one US study demonstrates that the average cost per murder exceeds $17.25 million and the average murderer costs close to $24 million. Costs include number of offenses, victim costs of crime, costs of criminal justice investigation and adjudication, cost of incarceration and so on (see Delisi et al. 2010) if you’re interested in understanding further how the monetary cost of homicide was calculated). While it is likely that these figures may be somewhat different in Canada, for argument’s sake, let’s say it can cost $15 million in Canada per homicide. In 2012, there were 543 homicides in Canada; you do the math!
