Objective:
The Ethnographic Family Research Project is designed to help you develop a deeper understanding of family structures, dynamics, and roles through first-hand observation and interaction. You will conduct an ethnographic study of a family (which could be your own or another family with their consent) to explore how sociological concepts and theories manifest in real-life family experiences.
Assignment Guidelines:
1. Select a Family for Study:
Choose a family that you have access to for observation and interviews. This could be your own family, a friend’s family, or another family that agrees to participate.
Ensure that the family is diverse enough in structure or experience to allow for a rich sociological analysis (e.g., multigenerational household, single-parent family, blended family, immigrant family, etc.).
2. Design Your Ethnographic Study:
Develop a plan for how you will conduct your research. This should include:
Observation: Spend time observing the family in various settings (e.g., home, family gatherings, daily routines). Take detailed notes on interactions, roles, and behaviors. You will turn in your notes as part of this assignment.
Interviews: Conduct interviews with family members. Prepare questions that explore their views on family roles, traditions, challenges, and how societal norms influence their lives.
3. Sociological Analysis:
Apply sociological theories and concepts learned in the course to analyze your findings. Consider how family roles, power dynamics, socialization, cultural norms, and external social forces influence the family’s structure and interactions.
Reflect on how the family’s experiences align with or diverge from the sociological literature on family life.
4. Structure of the Paper:
Introduction: Introduce the family you studied, including relevant background information, and state the key sociological questions you aimed to explore.
Methodology: Describe your research design, including how you conducted your observations and interviews. Discuss any ethical considerations, such as obtaining informed consent from participants.
Findings and Analysis: Present your key findings from the observations and interviews. Analyze these findings using sociological theories and concepts, discussing how the family’s experiences reflect broader social patterns.
Discussion and Reflection: Reflect on what you learned from the study. Discuss any challenges you faced in conducting the research and how the experience informed your understanding of family dynamics and roles.
Conclusion: Summarize your findings and discuss the implications for understanding families in a sociological context.
5. Citations and Academic Integrity:
Cite any sources you use in ASA format, including course materials or outside readings that inform your analysis.
Ensure that your work adheres to the principles of academic integrity, as outlined in the course policies. Plagiarism and ethical breaches in research (e.g., not obtaining proper consent) will not be tolerated.
6. Length and Format:
The written portion of the paper should be 7-10 pages in length (2000 word minimum, but no more than 3000), double-spaced, with 12-point Times New Roman font and 1-inch margins.
Include a title page (not included in the page count)
Include a reference page (not included in the page count).
Important Note:
This ethnographic project will be integral to your Final Exam Project, where you will need to synthesize insights from this study with your previous assignments (Family Case Study and Policy Proposal/Non-Profit Formation). Choose a family and approach that you can build on throughout the course.
Submission:
Upload your completed assignment to the course’s online platform by 11/17/2024.
Ensure that your file is in a Word document or PDF format.
ATTACH YOUR OBSERVATION NOTES AS A SEPARATE FILE.
