The Quantitative Decision-Making Assignment:
Discussion #1: Wrangling Big Data
For this week′s discussion, please watch the following two videos before writing your initial post listed below:
Tricia Wang – ″Thick Data″
https://www.ted.com/talks/tricia_wang_the_human_insights_missing_from_big_data?language=en
Nate Silver – “Big Data” (Please watch the first 30 minutes)

*In your initial post, connect the specific arguments that Wang and Silver are making to what you have been learning about preparing data effectively for quantitative decision-making. Your post should address the following:
• Role of big data as a movement in business decision-making
• Impact of the speakers’ arguments on how you think about data
• How to use big data analysis effectively to make strategic decisions about the future (be as specific as possible)
Your post should not merely summarize the videos or textbook but instead, take a stance on the role of big data in quantitative decision-making and business planning.
Then pose a question for your peers at the end of your post.
This might be a question that occurred to you while watching the videos or as you have reflected on the impact of big data on business that you would still like to discuss further.
Your initial post should be around 500 words and reference the course materials and videos as evidence for your claims.
*Discussion assignments will be graded based on the following three critical elements:
• Timeliness and completeness: Responses are consistent throughout the semester. To ensure timeliness and completeness, you should i) post an original response to the discussion prompts by the due date (between 300 and 500 words), ii) provide your opinion and constructive feedback to at least two original posts by your peers to show active engagement in the discussion by the due date (when giving feedback, please prioritize the posts that received less than two feedbacks), and iii) respond to your peers who replied to your post as well, addressing their questions or suggestions as part of an ongoing discussion of the topic by the due date.
• Participation: Shows a high degree of engagement and interaction with others.
Critical thinking: Addresses the question completely and in-depth, points are made, and evidence supports arguments/rationale; shows a clear grasp of content and elaborates with explanation and relevant examples
