During unit 1, we will read about and discuss challenges that students, particularly first-generation college students, face in persisting and succeeding in college. In addition, we will read and discuss strategies individuals can use to succeed in college and how institutions and faculty can support students. This essay will apply that learning.
Prompt
Write a thesis-driven that responds the following question: Based on our readings, discussions, and other class activities, what strategies and resources would you argue could most help first-generation students (like Vanessa) succeed in college?
Note, you can think about how students can help themselves, how faculty can help students, and how institutions can help students. You should consider a variety of strategies and resources, student-focused strategies such as mindset, campus resources, and institutional support. You may focus on student responsibility or institutional responsibility, or a combination.
Writing Instructions
Essay format: There should be an introduction paragraph, body paragraphs, and a conclusion paragraph.
Introduction: In the introduction of your essay, include background information that is relevant to your essay and leads to your thesis. Your thesis should take a position and identify the specific strategies and resources that you will argue for in your paper. The thesis is a direct answer to the prompt question in bold.
Body: Body paragraphs must focus on supporting the thesis’s argument. Use what we’ve learned so far about thesis-body paragraph unity to organize your ideas.
Support:
For every resource or strategy you recommend, be sure to include textual support—from a class text, personal interview, or the SMC website—for your claims. Include at least 3 different sources of support. At least TWO of these should be from our unit 1 materials.
This should be an argumentative essay using and analyzing textual evidence, not a personal narrative, though you may use first person experience as support in addition to textual evidence. Your life experience will of course affect how you understand the challenges of first-generation college students’ college success in general.
Conclusion: Conclude your essay with a call to action. Summarize your main arguments and focus on how first-generation college students can succeed.
Formatting Requirements
Essay should be typed in 12-point font.
Essay should have 1 inch margins. (Note: typically, your professors will ask for double spacing, but I assess essays more efficiently if they are single spaced.)
Essay should reach about 1.5-2 pages, single spaced. Please do not double space.
Essay should follow all MLA formatting guidelines.
Grading
I will provide feedback focused on helping you understand how the essay could be stronger and what to work on in the next unit’s paper. I will use a rating-centered rubric when assessing the work. To meet minimum requirements the essay must include the following elements:
Thesis: A thesis that responds to the prompt by take a position and identify the specific strategies and resources that you will argue would most help first-generation college students succeed in college
Structure: An introduction paragraph, body paragraphs, and a conclusion paragraph.
Unity: Body paragraphs that reflect and support the thesis. (Body paragraphs that simply summarize will not earn credit.)
Support: Evidence should come from at least three different sources from this unit.
The essay will not meet minimum requirements if it does any of the following:
Focuses on summarizing sources.
Fails to answer the prompt.
Fails to use sources from this unit.
Fails to include an introduction with a thesis, body paragraphs, and a conclusion.
Fails to respond with more than one page, single spaced.
