In 2 separate paragraphs please state an observation, question, or comment for each one individually:
1. The book of Luke
The Gospel of Luke takes the “long view” and has distinct stylistic differences to the other Synoptic Gospels and John. Notice the author addresses “Theophilus”, which means lover of God. His syntax is thorough, his empathy with women and the underclass overall. For example, he gives a special tribute to Mary, the VIrgin/Birthgiver (Theotokos) of God.
You may comment at large on any aspect of Luke, while being aware of his historical view and emphasis on the Holy Spirit. The Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles were originally one book, thus when we read Acts we will see the Holy Spirit established as the main character.
In contrast to Mark, the “parousia” (Second coming of Christ) is not imminent. He is also interested in women, gentiles, the poor, outcasts of every type, as he stresses the model Christian conduct led by Jesus. Of course, there is a lot of speculation that Luke might have been a gentile himself, a physician, and painter of the first icon of the Theotokos. Enjoy!
2. The book of John
The fourth Gospel is in a category by itself; why? Attributed to the “Beloved Disciple”, John’s Gospel reflects a deeply mystical portrait of Jesus, and uses “signs” and a series of “I am” proclamations that should inspire your critical thinking. Recall the Tetragrammaton of Exodus.
How is John’s Jesus perceived? Since John was the “Beloved Disciple”, what does John’s style reveal about Jesus?
You should explore this Gospel freely, and consider the artful speech, the depth of ideas, the appeal or effect on John’s audience.
