Introduction/Rationale: This third essay will reflect the most common type of essay you will encounter as a college student, as well as the most common form of communication among people both in and out of the workplace: the argument. Argument goes beyond simply disagreeing with someone else’s position and engaging in a heated debate on the topic; argument requires a set of skills that have their foundation in ancient Greek philosophy and is the very foundation for human progress. In this essay, we will explore what it means to truly engage in a critical conversation on a subject.
Assignment Prompt: Before beginning, please review the list of topics below that have been designated as Off Limits. If you submit an essay on one of the listed topics, you will receive an automatic zero. This list has been developed over several years of teaching and reflects topics that are either overdone, difficult to argue ethically, or lack a factual basis. You will also notice that there is not a brainstorming activity for this essay — you are still encouraged to work through the brainstorming step in order to determine what it is you want to write about and the things you’d like to say. Once you have a topic, you will create a thesis statement that follows the following template: “Opinion, because Reasons A, B, and C.” As you can imagine, the A, B, and C will be the key points you wish to develop in the body of your essay. You are NOT required to use outside research for this essay — it is simply an opinion-based argument.
Your essay will be at least five pages long and contain the following: a well-developed and engaging introduction paragraph which introduces your topic and any relevant/necessary information for your audience and your clear and explicit thesis statement, a well-developed body where each key point (the A, B, and C) are discussed in-depth in their own sections (at the very least, one paragraph each; however, you’ll likely aim for more), and a thought-provoking conclusion which does not merely summarize your essay and restate your thesis (that’s lazy, insulting to your audience, and ineffective), but also provides your readers with final thoughts to consider. There should also be evidence that you’ve incorporated some of the writing styles we have covered in the first two essays in order to make your point and create a strong, well-written essay.
