Getting Started
Diversity and culture matter a great deal in clinical social work practice. Effective engagement should start with recognizing that not all individuals, families, and groups are the same, nor do they need the same intervention. As part of your fourth advanced field placement and seminar, you were encouraged to seek out opportunities for engaging with family systems. Your experience engaging with family systems probably has taught you already that the needs of family systems can be quite diverse. You cannot use a one-size-fits-all approach for effectively engaging with families. In this workshop activity, you will discuss with your classmates your experience of engaging with family systems. Additionally, you will explore how you are using your knowledge of diversity and culture, gained through your coursework and your field placement experience, to inform your engagement with families.

Background Information
As you work toward improving your engagement with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities, you will discover that diversity and culture can function as sources of strength. Kelly and colleagues note that, in African American families, the family plays an important role in the life of the individual. A strong respect for elders, a bond with extended family, connection with “fictive kin” in the community, and both formal and informal community support networks, many of which are bound in religious traditions, are all noted as sources of strength for the family system. These various levels of support are often who African American families turn to in time of need. Cohen and colleagues state that the African American community networks help extend individual resilience and are important sources of strength for individuals encountering psychosocial stressors. In your field placement experience, continue to look for examples of culture as an asset to the family system, a resource on which family members can draw as they traverse difficult times.
