Week 2 Online Discussion: This is Water
Purpose
Why Do This Discussion?
This speech will enhance our understanding of vividly desсrіptive writing and use of example. The topic and content of the speech will also apply directly to our response assignment at the end of the wee.
Outcomes
Recognize vivid detail and exemplification in desсrіptive writing.
Apply ″awareness″ strategies to your writing experiences.
Evaluate a variety of media and technologies to address a range of audiences.
Describe a variety of rhetorical concepts to analyze and compose a variety of texts.
Your Initial Post
In 2005, the late contemporary writer, David Foster Wallace, was asked to deliver a commencement speech to the graduates of Kenyon College, a prestigious liberal arts college in Wallace′s home state of Ohio. The speech has come to be one of the most well-known speeches of its genre. While it has even been published in book form, listening to Wallace deliver the speech himself is still the best way to experience it.
This week, we are considering the writing strategies of using vivid desсrіption and example. Wallace draws upon these strategies heavily in order to allow his audience to relate to the points he is making.
For this assignment,
1) Take time to listen to the speech (linked below) and consider his use of example narratives and vivid desсrіptions.
2) Next, answer the prompt (below) in a well-developed paragraph by clicking ″Reply″ and typing your answer here in this discussion thread (target length is 200-300 words).
Prompt: How did Wallace′s use of examples/desсrіption help you better understand his points? What can you take away from this speech that might help you develop your writing? What can you take away that might help you navigate your daily life?
This is a conversation, so please be personable and feel free to share your reactions to the speech!
