When looking at the numbers of men that were involved in an army, it can be deceiving, it doesn’t necessarily mean that all of those men were involved in combat. There is a massive amount of work done to keep the grunts supplied and fed. It becomes a balancing act by a nation on how many men should they commit to the front lines and keep a workforce to supply those men. These land supply lines and maritime supply lines were crucial in both of the World Wars. And the disruption of these supply lines, by direct means by the enemy or unforeseen domestic events could spell disaster for any modern army. Especially in the more modern day of globalization of supply lines in peace time and how attacking the food supply of a nation might look entirely different in the 21st century. The outcomes of modern war are now dictated by how effectively supply lines are disrupted and how well yours are managed, gone are the days of a singular flashy victory on the battlefield.
