The American Nurses Association (n.d.a) set forth a code of ethics that guides nurses in all specialties in their professional practice and consists of nine provisions. The provisions provides an overview of the relationship between nurse and patient, nurse and colleagues; stipulates how to address conflicts of interest; the importance of protection of patients’ rights and confidentiality; nurses’ responsibility for promotion of the culture of safety, nursing judgement, decisions and actions; duties to self and others; responsibility for the healthcare environment; contributing through nursing research and scholarly inquiry; the nurse’s obligation to advance health and human rights; and to sustain integrity of the profession.
The American Nurses Association Public Health Nursing Standards is like that of the Scope and Standards of Professional Practice for Public Health Nursing in the manner that it sets out standards of practice for nurses. The key difference is that these standards pertain to nurses in the specialty of public health nursing. Additionally, the public health standards of nursing practice lay out competencies for generalist and the advanced public health nurse (American Nurses Association, n.d.b)
The California public health standards are similar to that of the American Nurses Association Public Health Nursing in that it provides guidelines for nurses who practice in the field of public health; however, such guidelines are specific to nurses who practice in this particular state (California Board of Registered Nursing, 2022).
Bekemeier et al. (2021) highlight that the role of advanced public health nurses is to work in partnership with communities and focus on improving the systems that negatively affect the health and well-being of populations. In addition, the goal of advanced public health nurses is to effectively lead population health promotion, improvement, protection, and policy development.
