When receiving assignments at the beginning of our shifts, a nurse called in that she couldn’t make due to family emergency. We were three nurses with no charge nurse, each nurse had 6 patients and now we had to accept 6 more patients for the missing nurse. One nurse said she couldn’t get extra patients due to her already heavy assignments; the nurse objected and said we should we should each accept equal share of the remaining patients. At this time I suggested for all of us to review our assignments and determine patient acuity, totality and other level of difficulty for our patients and then see how we can incorporate the additional patients into our assignments based on those factors. Surely, we were able to reassign our new patients including the new ones and we completed our shift as a team and without any conflicts or disagreements.
