Thought Leadership Exercise Week One: Globalization and the Global Imperative
Globalization and the Global Imperative
For this discussion, please read the Levitt and Gupta and Govindarajan articles in the Week One Readings
A few decades ago, Theodore Levitt predicted a highly globalized world economy. While it’s true that the world is a highly globalized place, not all of his prognostications have come true. Consider Levitt’s vision of Globalization and your experience with what exists today. In particular, consider your day to day experience, for example, decision making at your organization or your experience as a consumer of products and services.
1. What are the drivers and resisters of the phenomenon of globalization? Has globalization proceeded the way that Levitt predicted? What examples illustrate what Levitt got right and what he got wrong?
2. In your own words, describe what constitutes a global mind set. How does a global mind set influence the way that organizations
operate, develop products, pursue markets and customers, etc…?
3. What is the most globally successful company you can think of? Why has it succeeded the way it has?
