Explanation
The intent of this unit is to develop a personal biblically informed philosophy of Christian/Kingdom education. More than having students simply explain what they have read, this rigorous course expects students to articulate a biblically founded and professionally sound, personally developed philosophy of Christian / Kingdom education.

The starting point for examining this matter is contained in the pivotal truth that God created humans to have many, many more children than just His Son Jesus. Witness the fact that God’s first mandate or charge for Adam & Eve was to plentifully populate the earth with His image-bearers. The context for this prime charge was that Adam & Eve were to maintain or steward the earth as He would (cf. Genesis 1:26, 28 – the Dominion Mandate). No doubt important even after the Fall, the Dominion Mandate (a prime rationale for academics!) is still the context of the larger task of connecting people to God. After all, God is about the business of restoring His family (e.g., Ex 6:7; 2 Cor 6:16; Rev 21:3) as evidenced by the expectations of the Two Greatest Commandments (Matthew 22:37-40) and The Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20). And as also implied by the fact that the earth and all of its material improvements will eventually be destroyed by fire (2 Pet 3:7-13) to be replaced by a new and thus different earth (Rev 21:1).

All of this is to say that God’s plan is to (1) bring all people into His eternal family (2 Pet 3:9), and
(2) to have them be and act on earth as He would primarily by bringing His Kingdom to earth (cf.
Matt 6:33; Acts 1:3). Christian/Kingdom education should thus be perceived as a, if not the,
prime institution for equipping resident aliens — aka disciples of Christ (John 8:31), Holy Nation
citizens (1 Pet 2:9), Kingdom ambassadors (2 Cor 5:20), God’s priests (1 Peter 2:9), etc. to
accomplish these two main goals.

As a point of comparison to these issues, state, local, and federal governments do well at detailing specific learning outcomes, matching curriculum and instruction to these outcome statements, and assessing attainment of these outcome statements. Surely education for citizenship in God’s kingdom would be even more articulate about these qualities that are regularly found in education for mere temporal nation citizenship!

The assignment paper is to be viewed as constituting the student’s foundational basis of
a Christian/Kingdom education philosophy and will be graded as such. Be sure to

The following descriiptions should help get us started. The Knight text is largely a categorization of the various dimensions of educational philosophy with a special look at a Christian educational philosophy on pages 163 to 264. The Mason et al. text provides detailed examples of actual Kingdom Education practices. The Rushdoony text is a classic of Reconstructionist thinking (e.g., reconstructing Mosaic Law for contemporary society). The Johnson text, while not directly connected to education, provides rich implications regarding how the Holy Spirit can inhabit the Kingdom educational process.
